Le Vosges mountains and the Alsatian valley, known for its food, wine, fortresses and infinite forests. But hidden beneath the green canopy, a gem lies. A sandstone, coloured somewhere in between a persimmon and a blood orange.

The smooth but crimpy vertical walls are sometimes interrupted by bands of conglomerate potatoes. And if you are done with trying to trust your feet, you can shuffle over to the next sector, consisting of mega overhangs and horizontal roofs filled with slopers and jugs.

For those that want to achieve new heights, the southern granite provides some (alpine'ish) multipitch areas. Rocher de la Martinswand and Rocher du Hans, come to mind. They provide a nice place to get reacquainted with climbing on bigger walls, and scenic climbs up to 6 pitches are always nice!

Next to sport climbing there is also a tremendous amount of bouldering, on both granite and sandstone. The sandstone here can remind you of an orange Fontainebleau, and is also sometimes mentioned as Bleau's little brother. The granite blocs create some really cool friction based slab climbs, or mega compression moves on overhang.

And if you get too tired from all the climbing, there is enough culture to go around;  as the historical border area between France and Germany it forms its own little departmental identity and yes like I said, many castles and bunkers. Alsace also got inspired by their neighbours to start brewing beer, now almost two thirds of French beers hail from this region. Its climate is also perfect for growing wine, and therefore its known for its floral and aromatic rieslings and muscats.

Keep in mind that this is an independent weekend. Only climb in the styles you are certified for!
